A Consultant in Internal Medicine must have expertise in all the major medical specialties, including cardiology, chest medicine, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, rheumatology, neurology, endocrinology and gastroenterology. Patients commonly have problems overlapping these areas and their treatment must be integrated for the best results. A typical patient under the care of Internal Medicine might have angina, hypertension, diabetes and asthma. It would not be ideal to have four specialists all treating these problems independently.
Dr Johnston, a senior Consultant in Cardiology and Internal Medicine, has decades of experience in treating such patients in the context of a major teaching hospital, working with colleagues in other specialties on a daily basis.
